How Do I Know if I’m Depressed?
Feeling down or blue is a normal part of life. But how can you tell if those feelings have crossed into depression territory? Here are some signs that may indicate depression:
- Sadness and hopelessness – Do you feel sad, empty or tearful more often than not? Does everything feel pointless or hopeless? Persistent sadness can signify depression.
- Lack of interest – Are you no longer excited about hobbies you used to enjoy? Do you have no motivation to participate in activities? Loss of interest is a common symptom.
- Fatigue – Do you constantly feel tired and drained even if you get enough sleep? Depression often causes low energy and exhaustion.
- Changes in appetite – Has your appetite increased or decreased significantly? Sudden weight loss or gain can indicate depression.
- Sleep disturbances – Are you sleeping too much or too little? Insomnia or oversleeping can both stem from depression.
- Irritability – Do you frequently feel irritable, restless or agitated? Short-temperedness and moodiness may be depressive signs.
- Cognitive difficulties – Are you having trouble concentrating, making decisions or remembering details? Depression can impair cognitive abilities.
- Physical aches – Do you have unexplained headaches, stomachaches or body aches? Depression manifests physically sometimes.
- Thoughts of self-harm – Are you thinking about suicide or harming yourself? This requires immediate attention. Reach out for help.
If you are experiencing a few of these symptoms consistently for at least two weeks, it may signify clinical depression and warrant consulting a mental health professional. Persistent, moderate to severe symptoms are not something you should ignore. Seek support and find relief. You don’t have to manage depression alone.
